In April-May 2018, Belun’s Early Warning, Early Response (EWER) system continued monitoring violent incidents and changes to the security situation in Timor-Leste. Field monitors recorded 195 incidents. 32 of these incidents were caused by inflammatory language used by political parties provoking political party supporters to react with violence. There were 42 violent incidents against women. In 7 of these incidents, women were violently assaulted after being accused of doing black magic. Violent assaults as a result of black magic accusations have been clearly noted to affect women to a larger extent than men. Significant increases of violent incidents in Special Economic Administrative Region of Oekusi due to political parties’ campaign activities were recorded.
